For Disability Pride Month, HLB honors Dr. Hugh Herr (born 1964), an engineer and biophysicist whose mission to restore and enhance mobility for people with limb differences has revolutionized prosthetic technology.
An advanced rock climber from a young age, Dr. Herr lost both legs below the knee in a weather-related climbing accident. The experience inspired him to develop bionic limbs through Biomechatronics, integrating cutting-edge robotics and sensor technology to closely replicate the natural function, movement, and support of human limbs.
Today, Dr. Herr holds many patents and has won prestigious awards. He serves as a professor at the MIT Media Lab and helps lead the Yang Center for Bionics at MIT, where he continues to propel research in prosthetic innovation. His own prosthetic legs have enabled him to climb again and successfully complete highly challenging routes.
