This Women’s History Month, HLB honors Dr. Patricia Bath (1942–2019), the first Black woman physician to receive a U.S. medical patent.

In addition to inventing the Laserphaco Probe, which revolutionized cataract surgery, she also pioneered “Community Ophthalmology” to push for public health approaches to eradicate preventable blindness, advancing both medical innovation and health equity.
