During Pride Month, HLB celebrates Dr. Sara Josephine Baker, a pioneering physician and public health leader whose innovative work dramatically improved child and maternal health in early 20th-century New York City.
As the first director of the city’s Bureau of Child Hygiene, she implemented programs focused on hygiene, nutrition, and preventive care that saved tens of thousands of lives, particularly in immigrant communities. Dr. Baker lived authentically as an independent professional woman in a lifelong partnership with author Ida Wylie, embodying resilience and forward-thinking leadership that continues to inspire inclusive and equitable approaches in health care today.
