Diversity, Equity& inclusion
Diversity, equity, and inclusion must be lived, not just talked about. We are deeply committed to ensuring that these values are infused into every aspect of our business.
We believe that diversity makes HLB a more dynamic and innovative firm that provides best-in-class service to our clients. We are dedicated to creating and cultivating diversity in our workplace and supporting an inclusive workforce with varied backgrounds, including individuals from groups underrepresented in the health care law and government relations industries.
Our active Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is an essential part of bringing our commitment to life by bolstering retention and advancement of individuals from groups underrepresented in health law and policy and firm leadership, facilitating professional development of attorneys and government relations professionals, supplementing the firm’s efforts to recruit diverse candidates throughout the organization, and instilling a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the firm.
As a law firm focusing solely on the health care industry, HLB is keenly aware that health equity and improved health outcomes for underrepresented communities are critical societal needs inextricably linked to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In partnership with clients, community health institutions, and others, we are actively working to improve access to quality health care through educational and practical services that address various social drivers of health.
Achieving a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace is an ongoing effort at every level of the firm. We are committed to making meaningful changes to build, advance, and sustain diversity, both in our external commitments and our internal practices and policies.
• In March 2022, the firm launched its participation in the Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule Initiative certification program for midsized law firms. Our participation in the program expands on our previous adoption of the Mansfield rule in hiring, and seeks to increase the representation of women and underrepresented lawyers in firm leadership through adoption of policies designed to help advance careers of diverse attorneys, including through work on significant matters.
• Many of the firm’s lawyers are in leadership positions with minority bar associations, women’s legal associations, and other professional groups, and the firm encourages involvement in those associations.
• Through the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, the firm sponsors and participates in many diversity-related events.
• The firm provides up to 50 hours of billable hours credit for approved DEI-related leadership, advocacy, training and development.
• We provide firmwide training designed to build on our unconscious bias programs.
• We recruit personnel from various backgrounds to foster a diverse and inclusive workforce, and we communicate these expectations to our recruiters.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion must be lived, not just talked about. We are deeply committed to ensuring that these values are infused into every aspect of our business.

We’ve put this commitment into action. In 2023, the firm achieved Mansfield Certification. Awarded by Diversity Lab, Mansfield Certification measures the structural changes and steps we have taken to broaden the talent pool for consideration and to ensure our paths to leadership – including promotions, client pitch teams, appointments, and more – are open and transparent to all of our lawyers. We have re-committed to our Mansfield certification work with Diversity Lab for the benefit of our talent and clients.
